The Lego Mindstorms EV3

The current robot kit coming from the Lego Mindstorms line is the EV3. It is the third generation “intelligent brick” which came after the first RCX brick and then the NXT brick.

The Lego Mindstorms EV3 was launched in two versions: the educational set was released on August 1, 2013 and the retail set was released on September 1, 2013.

Needless to say, the EV3 is definitely an improvement from its predecessors, making building toys faster and more fun. It also makes the user (especially kids) a lot smarter and more creative. It inspires one to create several interesting and fun projects, including, of course, robot kits.

The Lego Mindstorms EV3 runs on Linux operating system. Unlike its predecessor NXT whose main processor is the ARM7 microcontroller, the EV3 has the ARM9 main processor which is definitely a lot stronger and faster. Other basic features of the EV3 include:

  • 64 MB RAM
  • 16 MB Flash memory
  • A slot for external storage (Micro SD card) up to 32 GB
  • USB 2.0 interface
  • Bluetooth and Wi-Fi-supported
  • Four input ports
  • Four output ports
  • Matrix display
  • Loudspeaker

The Lego Mindstorms EV3 comes in two versions: the retail set is called the EV3 Home (31313)  and the education set which is named the EV3 Education Core Set (45544).
