Robot Kits Gift Buying Guide for Kids

Robot Kits Gift Buying Guide for Kids
Robot Reviews

Then you think of robots as gifts for kids, you probably consider them as more of an entertainment device. However, with more and more advances in robotics and AI happening every day, there are also many more options for kids of all ages to build and work with robots which can be both fun and educational.  Here is a shopping guide and some of our favorite kits to consider as a great birthday or holiday gift.

Ages Up to Five Years

When we talk about technology, and particular robots, age should not be considered a barrier. The toys that are considered useful at the educational level are because of the possibilities they offer for children who use them at home, irrespective of their age.

Sphero OllieSphero Ollie

The creators of the Sphero 2.0 have recently put on the market an evolution of the same robot called ‘Ollie.’ This robot focuses more on the speed, twists and turns, and kids can do more with it through a Bluetooth connection with a smartphone.

Ollie is driven more like a video game character, but on a smartphone and with a virtual joystick on one side and a trick pad on the other. The little cylinder freely rolls around with a touch of the thumb once it is calibrated to know which way forward.

These pet robotsare already in use in some educational centers in the USA.

Dash & DotDash & Dot

One of the most complete robotics solutions for children has recently been released to the market. It’s called Dash andDot. The robot comes fully assembled from Wonder Workshop, and equipped with a tools and apps designed to make children excited about coding. Nevertheless, the robot’s easy-to-use customizable interactions and coding canvas is suitable for any age. Dash and Dot is sturdy enough to withstand tumbles, and has sound and movement detection sensors.

Dash and Dot are compatible with Google’s Blockly, allowing programming to a higher level, leaving us already at a recommended age for children of more than eight years.

Bee BotBee Bot

One robotic option for the education sector is Bee Bot. This small robot allows scaling the degree of difficulty of learning, starting from a toy with physical controls that allows directional programming without any extra element, to accepting programming from an application or another computer with a more complex simulation.

It is rechargeable, soyou can worry less about batteries replacement.

This little roboticinsect allows endless activities related not only to programming but language, mathematics or even artistic creativity.

From 5 to 9 years

Take the step to a higher level and enter the exciting world of robots that are more complex to build or maintain.

My first Robotic Kit

Toys and robots that involve total freedom of design fascinate kids. The imagination comes into play in the design and construction phase and later, during programming, it enters a more logical and schematic part of the game, which is run by Arduino.

This robotics kit by BQ can extend the kid’s creativity to as much as hewants since there are numerous pieces and elements to add. And to top it off, it is compatible with BQ printers, sokids can create and print their own housing in 3D for the robot.

Lego WedoLego Wedo

Lego is a reference when talking about toys and robotics for all ages. Wedo consists of parts with gears, motors, sensors and other elements needed to build a robot freely. Kids can as well follow the instructions and finish mounting any of the 12 preset models that come with step-by-step instructions.

These robots, once built, are connected easily and directly to a computer using a USB cable, where kids can program the character they want.

Parrot Jumping SumoParrot Jumping Sumo

The Parrot Jumping Sumo is the intermediary between the remote control vehicle toy and robot. The famous manufacturer of drones has launched its “ground” model, which can move at high speed (7 km/h) by jumping and spinning without control.

In addition to the camera that allows video recording and livestreaming, this Jumping Sumo includes a programming mode that allows the childrenplan a theoretical route, where to establish both the route and the type of movements, and acrobatics that they want to make for the ground drone.

Kibo

KIBO is designed to appeal to technically minded kids, those interested in physical activities, and those that connect more to arts and culture. With KIBO, children can build their robot and program it to do whatever they want, as well as decorate it.No apps or computer programsare required for KIBO.

KIBO offers children the opportunity to make their ideas physical and tangible. The child creates a program or sequence of instructions using the wooden KIBO blocks. They use the KIBO body to scan the blocks to tell the robot what to do,and pressing the button, theKIBO robot starts up.

OzobotOzobot

Blank paper and colored markers are enough to program or code Ozobot evo. This small device can interact with both electronic devices (the screen of an iOS tablet or Android) and with classic physical environments, such as paper.

It has an optical sensor that can detect the color of the ink, and it will trace out a basic black line or speed up when it hits a blue patch.Ozobot Evo has been upgraded to a programming system, which allows users code action into the robot directly.

Lego Mindstorms EV3Lego Mindstorms EV3

The Mindstorms EV3 is one of the favorite kits among coding enthusiasts. It combines robust programming capabilities with the popular versatility of Lego bricks. The Mindstorm EV3 presents loads of fun for kids in their learning experience, from undertaking preprogrammed “missions” to building custom bots. It has 9 alternative programming languages, infrared color and touch sensors, and it is suitable for various skill levels.

Robotis MiniRobotis Mini

The ROBOTIS MINI presents a challenging but interesting building experience for children. The kit comes with a fully-colored assembly manual that provides a step-by-step assembly instructions and building tips. It can be programmed using RoboPlus Task, which is a graphical, drag-and-drop programming C++ based tool.

All kids are not the same, and there’s a huge difference between what they like. For the children who are technologically inclined, we have tried to choose some robotic kits suitable for different age range to help them learn and have fun.

Below is a chart by age of some of the more popular robot kits on the market:
